You’re booked! Now what?! You’re probably feeling pretty elated, excited, and admittedly nervous! Fear not, I am with you every step of the way to help you prepare for your boudoir shoot. I gathered up my best tips to help you get totally prepared below!
One of the first few emails you’ll receive from me includes a lingerie and outfit prep guide! This is the perfect time to start ordering different types of lingerie to try on and see what makes you feel the most beautiful and what fits well. Think of other outfits you can bring like a sweater, dress, leather jacket, button down shirt – whatever calls to you and brings out your personality best. Start ordering these a couple months before your session, or head to a local boutique to try them on with help!
Once you try on everything you’ve ordered, bring your favorites and return the rest! You want to feel absolutely amazing, and it can be a little overwhelming. I recommend you always go with what makes YOU feel your best. When in doubt, bring something you already have and love!! Make sure you bring a variety of styles and colors, too. This will make your album design that much more intricate and gorgeous!
I hire the BEST hair and make-up artists who make you feel like a Goddess at your boudoir experience! Starting your session being pampered is the best way to calm your nerves and have some great conversation! These ladies have been in your shoes!
You get to decide what hair and make-up look you want! Bring your own inspiration photos or leave it up to the artists – we’ll make sure you love the way you look!
When you arrive at your shoot, you should come with a clean face with moisturizer on, and clean, DRY hair!
Your body will be in poses that it normally is not in, which can be a workout! Make sure to do some stretching before you head over!
Is it time for a wax? Start thinking about hair removal and up-keep you may need to do a week before your session. This can be hair removal and waxing, eyebrows, lash lifts, tints and refills. Make sure to do this at least a few days before your session so the redness and irritation can subside, especially if you have sensitive skin.
What would you bring to a deserted island? Water and lotion. Hydrate your skin and your body every day the week of your session! Remember tip #4, this will be a workout so keep drinking the good fluids like water, coconut water, etc, and skip the alcohol. Lotion and oil will help your skin stay healthy and glow! Bring your favorite with to use right before your session, too.
The answer is, YES! First, this is your time to pamper yourself, so do the mani and splurge on the pedi! Second, your nails will be in the images! I love adding detail shots to your album, it’s best to not have chipped nails. I recommend having your fingers match your toes, keeping it a little simpler than you may usually do, YOU are the star after all, but add your personality!
I know you’ve been busy packing, but make sure you bring your favorite accessories; heels, earrings, rings (don’t forget your wedding ring!). Bring something fun too like garter belts, body chains, thigh-highs or fishnets (go up a size! we want them to sit high on your leg). You can bring something of your partners to add a personal touch, or you can leave all of this at home and we can shoot barefoot and nude! It’s all about you.
Maybe one of the most important tips that I will remind you of – a lot – is to get your beauty rest the night before and to eat! Sleep really will help you feel better, avoiding those dark circles under the eyes and calm your nerves. The night before your session isn’t the time to have a girls night and bottle of wine, save that for after the shoot when you’re all glammed up!
Eating breakfast is so so important the day of your shoot, you’ll be in hair and make-up for an hour, shooting for a couple and then add on drive time if you have to travel… Don’t arrive on just caffeine! Make sure to eat something, your body will need that fuel – remember tip #4?! Bring those snacks with you too, we’ll take breaks in between sets!
Finally, be prepared to feel amazing afterwards. Boudoir photography is all about celebrating your body, and you should feel like a goddess when you’re done. Having fun and enjoying the experience is important, Boudoir shoots are meant to be gun and empowering to let loose and have a good time!
These are a few things I like to mention that can negatively impact your session!
Here is a packing list for you to screenshot or save so you can organize your stuff before your shoot!
The robe and slippers are especially important in the cold weather months because it can get a little chilly!
